After decades at the bottom of national education rankings, Louisiana reading scores improved dramatically as per the latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). In just five years, Louisiana has climbed from 49th to 32nd place in national rankings. Our state’s 4th graders led one of the largest reading gains in the nation, leaping from 42nd in 2022 to 16th in 2024.
State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley attributed the progress to bold, intentional efforts to challenge the status quo, praising the hard work of teachers and the state’s commitment to literacy-focused instruction.
“I believed that we could accomplish it if we were intentional and we challenged the status quo,” Brumley said. “And that’s what we’ve done for five years.”
This proves what we’ve always believed at Studyville: with the right support, students rise to the challenge.
Keeping Students on Track for Lasting Success
While Louisiana’s jump in national rankings is worth celebrating, more work awaits. Eighth-grader reading scores improved, yet not at the same rate of success, climbing only 10 spots to 29th place. Many students still struggle with core academic skills, and without continued support, progress will halt.
Education policy expert Christy Hovanetz noted that while early reading intervention has shown significant success, older students require continued support to thrive.
“Any students who may have been borderline struggling readers in 4th and 5th grade during the pandemic, they’re no longer receiving instruction on the fundamentals of reading,” Hovanetz said.
Now is a critical time to make sure students don’t fall behind again. The message is clear: student progress requires sustained effort, attention, and support. That’s where Studyville can make a difference.
Get Support with Personalized Tutoring
Statewide efforts have spurred incredible momentum, but classroom instruction alone isn’t always enough. Every student learns differently, and some need more time, deeper explanation, or one-on-one guidance to truly excel. Personalized tutoring and instruction bridges that gap and transforms student confidence and performance.
At Studyville, our expert tutors provide:
- One-on-one tutoring in math, reading, writing, and more
- Homework Support to ease frustration at home and end nightly battles
- ACT®/SAT® Prep to ensure students are ready for college standardized tests
- College Admissions Counseling to help students plan their future
Our goal is to capitalize on this momentum to ensure that reading progress and student success in Louisiana continues all the way through high school and beyond.
High Dosage Tutoring: Changing the Game in Louisiana Learning
One of the most effective ways to support student learning is through High Dosage Tutoring (HDT), a proven, research-based instructional model that addresses students’ unfinished learning from core instruction through intensive tutoring sessions at least three times a week. In 2024, Louisiana implemented HDT for certain K-5 students to support learning in math and reading.
As a proud, state-approved tutoring provider for Louisiana’s High-Dosage Tutoring Program, Studyville offers top-tier educational support tailored to meet state standards.
Our HDT Program offers:
- Expert Tutors: to deliver personalized, impactful instruction
- Comprehensive Organizational Structure: to collaborate with District Managers
- Progress Monitoring: to track data and keep families and educators informed
- Exclusive In-Person Tutoring: to encourage accountability and ensure efficacy
- Local Talent: to build community relationships and keep HDT tax dollars in district
With a commitment to excellence and proven results, Studyville is uniquely positioned to help districts achieve their educational goals.
